WHEN THE PORCELAIN ARRIVED IN MACONDO

It was December 1975, and my eyes barely peeked over the edge of the table, set in the “Grand Couvert” style, the famous banquet invented by Louis XIV, the Sun King, the gluttonous king. My Caribbean grandmother took advantage of the visit from the Andean family to show off her collection of china, brought to her by my grandfather, a cheerful sailor with skin tanned by all the suns from east to west of the Caribbean Sea.

There I had my first vision of porcelain: voluptuous shapes of a milk-white material with gold decorations. I picked up a cup and looked underneath it; it had a kind of green crown with the words “Marie Luisa, Bavaria 1946.”  I held it in my hand and discovered it was translucent, and then everything seemed more magical. So I looked under all the other pieces on the table; I discovered different signatures: Grindley’s blue lettering, Rosenthal‘s black lettering, and a tureen signed Capo di Monte with red and gold lettering! My favorite!

This is an excerpt from the story of my stories, “When Porcelain Arrived in Macondo.” Inspired by this tale, a few years ago I began work on an installation composed of porcelain pieces. This installation doesn’t yet have an exhibition space or a presentation date, but I’ll keep you updated on the project’s progress.

I recently moved my studio from the city of Faenza to a magical and bucolic location.

It is a pleasure to welcome you to my studio, nestled between a picturesque courtyard and a large orchard overlooking the Lamone River valley. It is located in Fognano di Brisighella, in the hills of the Emilia-Romagna region, in northwestern Italy. Fognano is a small, quiet town of 2,400 inhabitants. It is 16 km from Faenza and 4 km from the famous and charming medieval village of Brisighella.

It is located on the route from Bologna to Florence, next to the Vena del Gesso Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

My new address: Via Emiliani 37/9 – 48013, Fognano di Brisighella (Ravenna), Italy. YOU ARE WELCOME!!!

COLLABORATIONS

It is a pleasure to share with you about my collaboration with several international educational institutions. Training and encouraging new generations has led me to undertake a series of lectures and masterclasses, beginning with the Francisco Alcantara School in Madrid, Spain; the Ballardini Institute for Ceramics in Faenza, Italy; the ESCAL Higher School of Ceramics in Alcora, Spain; and most recently, the Academy of Fine Arts, Naples, Italy.

In the recent lecture at the Academy of Naples, which lasted more than two hours and continued with a discussion with professors and students, the focus was on the origin and purpose of creation for an artist, as well as their technical and conceptual process.

WORKSHOP 2024

Courses on porcelain in my studio.

Workshops in my studio in the beautiful Italian city of Faenza:

Faenza, an ancient city where its origins are lost in the 2nd century BC. following the Roman conquest, it has a long history of art and culture. In addition to its fame for ceramics, the city is known for its beautiful architecture, the kindness of its inhabitants and the ease of communication with other cities such as Florence, Bologna, Ravenna and Venice.

The home of the studio/showroom is located in Via Laghi, a few steps away from the train station and the city centre. This house was built in the early 1900s, one of the most beautiful and particular houses on the street, in the past a Venetian glass factory, with an almost Moorish expressive architecture.
